A rare early 18th century mahogany Wing Chair and Stool (c. 1740 American)

An extremely rare early eighteenth century American wing chair and stool, the chair with unusual concave front rail and double cone ā€˜cā€™ scroll arms, both with cabriole legs terminating in pointed pad feet, the stool accented with stylised fetlocks.

The chair retains all the original upholstery and fragments of the original fabric. The stool most likely retains the original hair pad. Both have been recently re-covered to the highest conservation standards.

Possibly from Virginia.

Medium The chair has Mahogany cabriole front legs; the back leg and wing sections are of Ash, the seat frame is of Walnut, with Eastern White Pine arm scrolls. The stool has Mahogany cabriole legs. The frame is of American Walnut.
Condition The chair and stool are in remarkable untouched condition, retaining much of the original upholstery beneath this wonderful cover. The legs and frame are original, strong and sound with only the stool bearing additional corner blocks, of considerable age. The chair is an educational voyage back to the day it was made.
Provenance Retained for several generations in the home of a Quaker family from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England and sold by their executors in 2001.
